An osteopathic physician or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.), is a fully trained and licensed physician. However, in addition to a full medical curriculum, D.O.'s have training that focuses on the body's structure, function and its ability to help heal itself. The D.O. philosophy of patient care focuses on the whole person, not just a specific illness or injury. This distinct approach was developed more than 100 years ago.
Other than M.D.'s, D.O.'s are the only other group of physicians in the United States licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication. They may specialize in family practice or in any other specific field of medicine. While the physicians at St. Thomas More Osteopathic Treatment Center are certified in other areas of medicine, they only offer Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) services at the center.
